OPERATION CROSSROADS COMMAND STUDY SCALE MODEL OF ATOM TEST LOCALE—This Big Three of the Joint Army and Navy Task Force One study a scale model of the Bikini Atoll Lagoon, in the Pacific Marshall Islands, where the postponed peacetime atomic bomb tests are scheduled for midsummer. The arrangement of the Naval target ships in the hypothetical lagoon approximates a pattern that will be used in the tests.
Left to right: Dr. L. A. Sayward, director of the civilian scientific groups participating in the test studies and research; Vice Admiral W. H. P. Blandy, USN, overall commander of the Operations Crossroads; and Lt. Gen. William E. Kepner, Deputy Commander and Senior Army Member of the Task Force Joint Staff.
