- SCIENTIFIC RESERVE—“Pluto” (short for Plutonium) the wild dog of Bikini, shown with captors John Donofrio, ship’s cook first class of Bremerton, Washington, (left) and Earl Christiansen of Allentown, Pennsylvania. After running wild for a year on Bikini, Pluto was finally lured into captivity and eventual domestication by a hambone. She will be brought back to the United States aboard the USS Chilton, Bikini scientific resurvey laboratory ship, to share honors with pig “Jill” and goat “D O Flotow,” famed survivors of the Bikini atom bomb blasts.
