MINUTEMAN train will head for the nearest launch siding. The train moves into place and the crew prepares to execute a training alert. The missile car depicted here is one of the earlier concepts and does not necessarily depict the eventual operational configuration. The missile is contained inside. It can be erected and could be launched remotely from the launch control car. The full size MINUTEMAN test train which will depart from Hill Air Force Base, Utah, 20 June on the first of a series of tests over the nation's railroads will not carry any missile cars.
MINUTEMAN is being developed by an Air Force-industry team under the executive management of the Air Force Ballistic Missile Division, ARDC. Associate prime contractors on the team include Boeing - assembly and test; Autonetics - inertial guidance; AVCO - re-entry vehicle; Thiokol - first stage; Aerojet (with limited back-up by Thiokol) - second stage; Aerojet and Hercules Powder (parallel programs stressing different approaches and higher potential performance) - third stage; and Space Technology Laboratories - systems engineering and technical direction.
